CONTRIBUTOR – cO-FOUNDER RAINBOW CLASSIC

Charles “Chuck” Leahey’s long-time support of the University of Hawaii (UH) Athletic Department is legendary.

In his position as sports director of Pearl Harbor, Leahey allowed the fledgling UH Rainbow Football Team to utilize Pearl Harbor’s Block Arena Field for pre-season training, beginning in 1968. His philosophy was that nothing was more important to the morale and welfare of servicemen stationed in Hawai’i than to be a part of the local sports scene.

Leahey, along with Red Rocha, co-founded one of the nation’s most respected pre-season basketball classics, The Rainbow Classic, which is still one of the premier basketball tournaments in the nation. He also founded the equally prestigious Easter Rainbow Baseball Tournament.

I used to deliver chuck’s Honolulu star bulletin to him when he was a chief petty officer at the sports and rec. information center administration building in pearl harbor. He was always in a good mood and gave me a great tip. I also played some basketball at the old hoop at pearl harbor kaielementary with Jimmy. He would call all the plays and make crowd noises …a sign of things to come. Chuck’s son Mickey was a great little league baseball player for pearl harbor LL.
