WORLD CHAMPION – ROPING

Ikua Purdy was born in Mana, Kaua’i, Hawai’i. He won many island championships and was the popular king of paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys).

In 1908, Purdy became the only Hawaiian cowboy to win a Cheyenne championship. His time for the roping and steer-
tying championship was 1 minute, 6 seconds on a rainy day.

He moved to Maui in 1920 and for 23 years was the ranch foreman for Ulupalakua Ranch.

In 1999, Purdy was inducted into the National Cowboy Museum, Rodeo Hall of Fame.

“Aloha, I lived in Oahu 1974-1976, duty station Pearl Harbor. I rented a studio and then duplex from “Miss Purdy” who was the apartment manager. She was good to me and I wondered if she was this lineage. My name was Crampton then. Thank You.”
