PIONEER – FOOTBALL/BASEBALL

As a pioneer of college and professional football, Henry “Honolulu” Hughes, Jr. was the first native Hawaiian to play professional football. Hughes played when football was developing as a national professional sport. He also played football for the Boston Braves in 1931 and 1932. Hughes was an original member of the Redskins. He was the first Hawaiian to enter Oregon State University in 1927 and graduated with a degree in engineering.
