CONTRIBUTOR – NATIONAL AMATEUR ATHLETIC UNION AND OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

Ellen Fullard-Leo became a member of the local chapter of the National AAU in 1917 as a delegate of the Ulunui Swim Club. In 1917, she became a member of the Board of Governors of the National AAU. She served on the National Executive Committee from 1921 until her death.

In 1924, she was a member of the Executive Committee of the Paris Olympic Games and again at the Helsinki Games in 1952. She also was an official at the 1951 Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1958, she organized the Hawai’i Chapter of the U.S. Olympians and served as secretary for the rest of her life.

She was known as “America’s Grande Dame of Amateur Athletics” because of her dedication to the advancement of amateur athletics and is a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
