WORLD CHAMPION – BOXING

Paul Fujii, similar to so many others from this colorful sport, came from Kalihi Valley on the island of O’ahu and graduated from Farrington High School.

After a brilliant career built on dramatic knockouts, Fujii won the World Boxing Association (WBA) Junior Welterweight Championship (140 lbs.) when he defeated Sandro Lopopolo of Italy in Tokyo.

In August 1968, after several title defenses, he was stripped of his title when he failed to sign an agreement with the number one contender, Nocoloni Loche of Argentina. In July 1970, he announced his retirement due to a hip injury. His overall record was 34-4 (30 Knockouts).
