PIONEER – SWIMMING

For many years, Richard F. Cleveland was considered the “Fastest Human Swimmer in the World.” At one time, Cleveland held simultaneously four world records in the men’s 100-yard free-style swim, 75-yard free-style swim, 400-meter relay and the 100-meter free-style swim.

Cleveland was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1991 for his contributions to swimming and the innovations he brought to competitive swimming. He was personally responsible for making weight-training an integral part of competitive swimming.
