Francis “Mr. Sports of Hawaii” Hyde I’i Brown
Francis Hyde l’i Brown, former legislator, philanthropist and sportsman, was known as “Mr. Golf of Hawai’i.”
In Hawai’i, Brown won the Manoa Cup a record nine times. Within an 18-month period, from 1929 to 1930, he won amateur golf championships in Japan, California and Hawal1. He is still remembered in Scotland for his record-breaking 67 score at the famed St. Andrew’s Golf Course in 1924, while practicing for the British Amateur Tournament.
He was one of the main benefactors of polo at Mokuleia Polo Field and was one of the main forces that kept the Hawai’i Islanders baseball team in Hawai’i for so long.
